SALIENT FEATURES

The XAT exam is conducted online in English language only, and is divided into two parts. Part I contains approximately 75 MCQs in Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, allotted 170 minutes. Part II consists of 20 MCQs in General Knowledge, to be completed in 10 minutes—for a total of 95 questions. Each correct answer awards +1 mark, while wrong answers in Part I attract –0.25 marks; unanswered questions beyond eight consecutively lead to an additional –0.10 penalty. There is no negative marking in the GK section, and its score does not affect the percentile. The selection process includes: clearing the XAT followed by shortlisting, then GD/WAT, and finally a Personal Interview for final admission.

EXAM PATTERN

The XAT exam is conducted in two parts – Paper I and Paper II. Paper I includes Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation with around 75 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 175 minutes, carrying negative marking of 0.25 for each wrong answer. Paper II consists of General Knowledge (25 questions) and an Essay Writing task, to be attempted in 30 minutes, with no negative marking. In total, the exam has about 100 questions and 1 essay to be completed in 3 hours 10 minutes.

EXAM SYLLABUS

The XAT syllabus broadly covers five areas. The Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning section tests reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, critical reasoning, and para-based questions. The Decision Making section presents caselets and real-life situations to assess ethical judgment, analytical ability, and problem-solving. The Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation part includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number systems, modern mathematics, and interpretation of data through tables, charts, and graphs. The General Knowledge section checks awareness of current affairs, business, economy, history, geography, polity, and other static topics. Lastly, the Essay Writing task evaluates a candidate’s ability to structure thoughts and arguments clearly on abstract, social, or business-related topics.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To appear for XAT, candidates must meet the required academic qualifications. There is no upper age limit for applying, and candidates from India as well as foreign/NRI applicants are eligible under specified conditions.

Nationality – Indian citizens can apply directly through XAT, while NRI and foreign candidates may apply using their GMAT scores (except for Dubai and Kathmandu test centers where XAT is accepted).

Education – Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years duration in any discipline from a recognized university. Students in their final year of graduation are also eligible, provided they complete their degree by the specified timeline.

Age – There is no age limit for applying to XAT.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection through XAT is carried out in multiple stages. First, candidates appear for the XAT exam, which serves as the primary screening test. Based on the scores, participating institutes shortlist candidates for further rounds. HOW TO APPLY

Application Fee

The XAT application fee is paid online at the time of form submission. Candidates applying for XLRI programs in addition to the exam need to pay an extra fee per program.

ADMIT CARD

The XAT admit card is released online on the official website for all registered candidates. It must be downloaded and carried to the exam center as no hard copy is sent by post. The admit card contains details such as candidate’s name, roll number, exam date, time, reporting time, and test center address. Candidates must also carry a valid photo ID proof along with the admit card for verification.

EXAM RESULTS

There is no fixed official syllabus for XAT, but based on past papers, the following topics are covered:

Reading Comprehension (RC): Long and short passages with inference-based questions

Grammar & Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, fill in the blanks, sentence correction, analogy

Critical Reasoning: Strengthen/weaken arguments, assumptions, conclusions, para completion

Logical Ability: Para jumbles, logical consistency, odd one out

B. Decision Making (DM)

Business Case Studies: Profit vs ethics, resource allocation, HR situations

Personal Scenarios: Moral dilemmas, decision under constraints

Logical Scenarios: Data-based or reasoning situations

Requires judgment, not formula-based solving

C. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA & DI)

Arithmetic: Percentages, Profit & Loss, Ratio & Proportion, Time & Work, Time & Distance

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2026, conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, is scheduled for January 4, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in computer-based test (CBT) mode across 109+ cities in India, with registrations open from July 10, 2025, to December 5, 2025, via xatonline.in, requiring a fee of Rs. 2,200 (plus Rs. 200 per XLRI program). Admit cards will be available from December 20, 2025, and a mock test window is set for August 30–31, 2025, for early applicants (by August 27, 2025). EXAM PATTERN

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). It is known for its challenging and unique format compared to CAT and other MBA entrance exams.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

XAT Exam Detailed Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualification

Candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline from a recognized university or institute.

Candidates in their final year of graduation (appearing students) can also apply, provided they complete their final exams by June of the admission year and submit proof within the institute’s deadline.

No minimum percentage of marks in graduation is required (unlike some exams). Even pass-class graduates can apply.

2. Nationality

Indian candidates can apply and take the exam directly.

NRI/Foreign candidates can apply either through XAT or GMAT (GMAT scores accepted by XLRI and other XAT-associated institutes).

3. Age Limit

There is no upper or lower age limit for appearing in XAT. Candidates of any age group with the required qualification are eligible.

4. Work Experience

Work experience is not mandatory to apply for XAT.

However, for some specific programs (like XLRI’s GMP – General Management Program), a minimum of 5 years of managerial/supervisory experience is required as per program guidelines.

5. Number of Attempts

There is no restriction on the number of attempts. A candidate can appear for XAT as many times as they wish, provided they meet the qualification criteria.

6. Programs Specific Eligibility (For XLRI & XAT-participating colleges)

BM (Business Management) & HRM (Human Resource Management): Any graduate can apply.

GMP (General Management Program): Graduate + minimum 5 years of relevant work experience.

FPM (Fellow Program in Management): Master’s degree or equivalent with at least 55% marks, or a professional qualification like CA/ICWA/CS with at least 55%.
