LATEST UPDATE 2026
JEE Main 2026 dates have been announced by the NTA. The JEE Main 2026 examination will be conducted in two sessions, scheduled for January and April. As per the official schedule, JEE Main 2026 Session 1 will be held from 22 January to 31 January 2026, and the result will be declared on 12 February 2026. Meanwhile, JEE Main 2026 Session 2 will take place from 1 April to 8 April 2026, with the result expected to be announced on 12 April 2026.
IMPORTANT DATES
JEE Main 2026 will be conducted in two sessions. Session 1 is scheduled from 21 to 30 January 2026, while Session 2 will take place from 2 to 9 April 2026. The registration process is expected to be held in October–November 2025 for Session 1 and February–March 2026 for Session 2. As per the NTA schedule, the admit cards and answer keys will be released a few days before the respective examinations.

Seat Details
Collectively, over 45,000 seats are available across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, with admissions conducted through JoSAA counselling for B.Tech and B.Arch programmes. These seats are allocated according to reservation categories such as OBC, SC, ST, and EWS. The seat intake varies by institute, with NITs offering approximately 24,000 seats and IIITs around 9,000 seats, across popular engineering branches including Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, and Mechanical Engineering.
HOW TO APPLY
Candidates can apply for JEE Main 2026 through the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA) by following the steps given below:
Step 1: Online Registration
Visit the official JEE Main website and click on “New Registration”. Enter basic details such as name, date of birth, mobile number, and email ID. A unique application number will be generated.
Step 2: Fill Application Form
Log in using the application number and password. Fill in personal details, academic qualifications, category, exam city preference, and paper choice (Paper 1 – BE/B.Tech).
Step 3: Upload Documents
Upload scanned copies of the following documents in the prescribed format:
Passport-size photograph
Signature
Category certificate (if applicable)
PwD certificate (if applicable)
Step 4: Pay Application Fee
Pay the application fee online using Debit Card, Credit Card, Net Banking, or UPI. The fee varies based on category and number of papers applied for.

The JEE Main 2026 Admit Card will be released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on the official website jeemain.nta.nic.in. Candidates who successfully submit the application form and pay the required fee will be able to download the admit card online.

Important Instructions:
Admit card must be carried to the exam centre along with a valid photo ID proof.
Entry to the exam hall will not be allowed without the admit card.

COUNSELLING PROCESS
Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes through JEE Main 2026 is conducted via a centralized counselling process organized by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB).
Step 1: Declaration of JEE Main Result
After the completion of both sessions of JEE Main 2026, the All India Rank (AIR) and category-wise ranks are released by NTA. These ranks are used for seat allocation.
Step 2: Registration for Counselling
Eligible candidates must register online on the official JoSAA/CSAB website using their JEE Main 2026 credentials to participate in the counselling process.
Step 3: Choice Filling and Locking
Candidates are required to select and arrange their preferred institutes and branches (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, etc.) in order of priority. After finalizing choices, candidates must lock their preferences within the specified time.
Step 4: Seat Allotment
Seat allotment is done based on:

Choices filled by the candidate
Availability of seats
JoSAA conducts multiple rounds of seat allotment.
Step 5: Acceptance of Seat
Candidates who are allotted a seat must:

Candidates must upload or report with original documents for verification, including:

OVERVIEW
The Joint Entrance Examination (Main), commonly known as JEE Main 2026, is a national-level entrance examination conducted to shortlist candidates for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Plan programmes offered by 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and 19 Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). JEE Main 2026 also serves as the eligibility examination for admission to the IITs through JEE Advanced 2026. Paper 1 of JEE Main is conducted for admission to B.Tech programmes, while Paper 2 is held for B.Arch and B.Planning courses.
The examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in multiple sessions each year and is held across all states of India as well as in several countries abroad, in 13 different languages.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process of JEE Main 2026 is based purely on performance in the entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Step 1: Appearing in JEE Main 2026
Candidates appear for JEE Main 2026, which is conducted in two sessions (January & April).
For BE/B.Tech, Paper 1 is considered.
Candidates can appear in one or both sessions.
Step 2: Normalization & Percentile Calculation
Since the exam is conducted in multiple shifts, NTA uses a normalization process.
NTA Score (Percentile) is calculated based on relative performance across shifts.
The best NTA score out of both sessions is considered for ranking.
Step 3: Preparation of All India Rank (AIR)
Based on the final normalized NTA score, NTA prepares the All India Rank (AIR).
The AIR is released category-wise (GEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS).
This rank determines a candidate’s selection status.
Step 4: Qualification Status
Candidates who score above the cutoff percentile are:

3. Preparation of lyophilic and lyophobic sols.
4. Kinetic study of the reaction of iodide ions with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature.
EXAM PATTERN
JEE Main examination for B.E/ B.Tech is a computer-based online test that includes three sections namely, Physics Chemistry & Mathematics. Questions are based on Objective Type – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and questions for which the answer is a numerical value, with equal weightage to Mathematics, Physics, and chemistry.
The question paper is divided into two sections (Sections A & B) with a total of 75 questions and a total of 300 marks. The time duration of the examination is 180 minutes.

Mode of Examination
JEE Main examination for B.E/ B.TECH is a Computer Based Test (CBT) only.
Medium of Examination
1. Following the National Education Policy (NEP) the JEE (Main) will now be conducted in Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu for the first time, in addition to Hindi, Gujarati and English.
2. The option of language for question paper should be exercised while filling up the Application Form online and it cannot be changed at a later stage.
3. It is worth noting that for the correctness of the questions in all the question papers, the English version will be taken as final.

A total of 90 Questions from the above-mentioned sections are asked in JEE Main Examination where all three sections comprise 100 marks each summing up to 300 Marks.
Marking Scheme Highlights
For Section A
1. For every correct answer or the best answer, Four marks (+4) will be awarded.
2. For each incorrect attempt, one mark will be deducted as a negative marking.
3. For Questions Unanswered / Marked for Review, no marks will be deducted.
For Section B
1. For every correct answer or the best answer, Four marks (+4) will be awarded.
2. No marks will be deducted for incorrect answers in this section.
3. This year there will be a negative marking in both MCQs and numerical value answers.
Method of determining merit:- Conversion of the raw score in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Total into NTA scores.Overall merit shall be prepared by merging NTA scores of all shifts of all days.
Method of resolving ties:- Tie between candidates obtaining equal Total NTA scores in B.E./B.Tech will be resolved in the following descending order:
1. NTA score in Mathematics, followed by
2. NTA score in Physics, followed by
3. NTA score in Chemistry, followed by
4. Candidates having a lesser ratio of negative to positive responses
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The National Testing Agency will publish the eligibility criteria for JEE Main along with the information brochure. Each applicant for JEE Main must meet the eligibility criteria set out by the NTA in order to complete the application form and to appear in the exam. The candidates should check JEE Main Eligibility before registration to fill in details as required and avoid making any mistakes. The eligibility criteria for JEE Main consists of details such as educational qualification, age limit, nationality, grades obtained in grade 12 compulsory subjects, etc.
Nationality
Candidates belonging to the following category are eligible for JEE MAINS –
1. Indian Nationality
2. Overseas Citizen of India
3. Person of Indian Origin
4. Foreign National Candidates
Age Limit
For appearing in the JEE (Main) there is no age limit for the candidates. However, the candidates may be required to fulfill the age criteria of the Institute(s) in which they are desirous of taking admission.
Education Qualification
1. The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/ State Board such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc
2. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
3. Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy
4. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
5. Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
6. Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
7. A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State board of technical education of at least 3 years duration.
8. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
9. High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
State Eligibility
1. The state of eligibility refers to the code of the state from where a candidate has completed the class 12th (or equivalent) qualifying examination.
2. It is important to note that the State code of eligibility does NOT depend upon the native place or the place of residence of the candidate.
3. If a candidate has passed Class XII (or equivalent) qualifying examination from one state but appeared for improvement from another state, the candidate’s State code of eligibility will be from where the candidate first passed the Class XII (or equivalent) examination and NOT the State from where the candidate has appeared for improvement.
4. Candidate passed/appearing class 12th from NIOS should select the State of Eligibility according to the State in which the study centre is located.
5. For Indian nationals passing the Class XII (or equivalent) examination from Nepal/Bhutan, the State code of eligibility will be determined based on a permanent address in India as given in the passport of the candidate.
6. The State code of eligibility of OCI/PIO passing Class XII (or equivalent) examination in India is at par with Indian nationals. However, OCI/PIO passing the Class XII (or equivalent) examination from an institution abroad are eligible for Other State quota seats or All India quota seats (but NOT for Home State quota seats) in all NITs, IIEST and Other-CFTIs.

In the case of Institutes run by the Central Government, the reservation would be applicable as mentioned below:

1. Each category will have 5% reservations for the candidates with 40% or more disability as defined in Section 2 (r) and (zc) of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016.
2. In the case of the Institutes run/aided/recognized by State Governments, the reservation policy of the respective State Governments shall be applicable.
Notes:
1. Eligibility criteria must be verified by the candidates before they proceed with the application process.
2. Final admission of the qualified candidates will be subject to fulfillment of JEE Main eligibility criteria .
3. If any candidate is found ineligible at a later date even after admission to an institute, his/ her admission will be cancelled.
4. The eligibility criteria for certain institutes might vary from the basic eligibility criteria for appearing in the JEE Main exam .
5. No admit card shall be issued to the candidates who do not fulfill the eligibility criteria for the entrance exam.
IMPORTANT DATES
JEE Main 2026 will be conducted in two sessions. Session 1 is scheduled from 21 to 30 January 2026, while Session 2 will take place from 2 to 9 April 2026. The registration process is expected to be held in October–November 2025 for Session 1 and February–March 2026 for Session 2. As per the NTA schedule, the admit cards and answer keys will be released a few days before the respective examinations.
