EXAM PATTERN

The Staff Selection Commission describes the SSC Junior Engineer selection process in its official notification. Candidates are first required to appear for Paper I, which is an objective-type examination consisting of multiple-choice questions. Those who qualify in Paper I are shortlisted for Paper II. Final selection is based on performance in Paper II, followed by document verification and a medical examination.

Understanding the SSC JE exam pattern is important before applying for the recruitment. The examination is conducted in two stages—Paper I and Paper II—each with a different structure. Candidates should review the pattern carefully to understand the exam format, duration, and marking scheme.

Paper I Exam Pattern

Mode: Objective Type Computer-Based Test

General Intelligence & Reasoning – 50 Questions – 50 Marks
General Awareness – 50 Questions – 50 Marks
General Engineering (Civil / Electrical / Mechanical) – 100 Questions – 100 Marks

Total – 200 Questions – 200 Marks

Duration – 120 Minutes
Duration with Scribe – 160 Minutes

Note: Candidates must attempt only one section of General Engineering (Part A – Civil, Part B – Electrical, or Part C – Mechanical) based on their educational qualification as selected in the online application form. The same engineering discipline will apply for both Paper I and Paper II.

Mode of Examination

SSC JE Paper I and Paper II are conducted in Computer-Based mode and consist only of objective-type multiple-choice questions.

Medium of Examination

The question papers are available in both English and Hindi.

Marking Scheme

  1. Each correct answer carries 1 mark.

  2. Negative marking is applicable:
Paper I – 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer
Paper II – 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer

  3. No marks will be deducted for questions that are not attempted.

Minimum Qualifying Marks

UR – 30%
OBC / EWS – 25%
Other Categories – 20%

Normalization of Marks

Since the SSC JE examination may be conducted in multiple shifts, the Staff Selection Commission uses a normalization process to maintain fairness. This method adjusts scores to account for differences in the difficulty level of question papers across various shifts.

The normalized score of a candidate is calculated using a statistical formula that considers:

  • Average marks of the top 0.1% candidates across all shifts

  • Average marks of the top 0.1% candidates in the candidate’s shift

  • Mean and standard deviation of marks across all shifts

  • Mean and standard deviation of marks of the specific shift

  • Actual marks obtained by the candidate

This process ensures that candidates are neither advantaged nor disadvantaged due to the variation in difficulty levels between shifts.

Normalization Formula (Multi-Shift Exams)

Normalized Marks =
[(Average of top 0.1% marks across all shifts – Overall Mean + Overall Standard Deviation) ÷ (Average of top 0.1% marks of the candidate’s shift – Shift Mean + Shift Standard Deviation)] × (Candidate’s Actual Marks – Shift Mean + Shift Standard Deviation) + (Overall Mean + Standard Deviation)

Explanation of Terms

Normalized Marks
The adjusted score of a candidate after applying the normalization process.

Average of Top Candidates Across All Shifts
Average marks of the top 0.1% candidates considering all shifts together (rounded up).

Overall Mean + Standard Deviation
Combined value of the mean and standard deviation of marks across all shifts.

Average of Top Candidates in a Shift
Average marks of the top 0.1% candidates in the candidate’s specific shift (rounded up).

Shift Mean + Standard Deviation
Sum of the mean marks and standard deviation of that particular shift.

Actual Marks
The raw marks obtained by the candidate in the examination.

Highest Reference Mean Value
The mean value of the shift that has the highest combined mean and standard deviation among all shifts.

Final normalized scores are calculated up to five decimal places for accuracy.

Paper II Overview

Mode – Computer-Based Test
Total Marks – 300
Duration – 120 Minutes (160 Minutes with scribe)

Candidates must attempt the same engineering branch selected in Paper I.
