Eligibility Criteria

To apply, candidates must meet specific nationality, age, and educational requirements.

1. Nationality

A candidate must be:

  • A citizen of India.

  • A subject of Nepal or Bhutan.

  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia), or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

2. Educational Qualification

  • Junior Statistical Officer (JSO): Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with at least 60% Marks in Mathematics at 12th standard OR Bachelor’s Degree with Statistics as one of the subjects at the degree level.

  • Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer: Bachelor’s Degree. Desirable: CA, CMA, CS, M.Com, or MBA (Finance).

  • All Other Posts: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or equivalent.

  • Note: Final year students may apply provisionally if they complete their degree before the cutoff date.

Exam Syllabus

  • Tier-I: Focuses on General Intelligence (Analogies, Coding-decoding), General Awareness (Current Affairs, Science, History), Quantitative Aptitude (Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry), and English (Grammar, Vocabulary).

  • Tier-II (Paper I): Advanced level Arithmetic, Probability, Statistics, Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Computer Basics (CPU, Software, Internet).

  • Tier-II (Paper II & III): Specific syllabus covering Statistics theories and Finance/Economics concepts respectively.

Selection Process

The selection is strictly merit-based and involves the following stages:

  1. Tier-I: Qualifying in nature. Marks are used to shortlist candidates for Tier-II.

  2. Tier-II: The primary determinant of the merit list.

    • Section I & II: Used for ranking.

    • Section III (Computer) & Section IV (DEST): Qualifying in nature (Higher cut-offs applied for specific posts like ASO/Inspector).

  3. Document Verification: For candidates who clear the merit cut-off.

  4. Final Merit: Based on the aggregate performance in Tier-II (and Paper II/III where applicable) and the preference of posts submitted by the candidate.

SSC CGL Selection Process 2025–26

The recruitment process for SSC CGL 2025–26 is a comprehensive, multi-stage assessment designed to evaluate candidates on various parameters including aptitude, subject knowledge, and technical skills. The selection is strictly merit-based and follows a tiered structure.

Stages of Selection

Stage 1: Tier-I (Preliminary Examination)

  • Nature: Qualifying.

  • Purpose: To shortlist candidates for the Tier-II examination.

  • Scoring: Marks scored in Tier-I are not counted toward the final merit list. Candidates are shortlisted category-wise based on normalized scores.

Stage 2: Tier-II (Mains Examination)

  • Nature: Merit-Deciding.

  • Format: Candidates shortlisted from Tier-I must appear for all applicable papers in Tier-II.

    • Paper-I: Compulsory for all candidates.

    • Paper-II: Compulsory only for Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) & Statistical Investigator Grade-II aspirants.

  • Sectional Qualification: It is mandatory to qualify in all sections of Paper-I.

    • Note: Section-III (Computer Knowledge) and Section-IV (Data Entry Speed Test – DEST) are qualifying in nature. However, higher qualifying standards are set for specific posts requiring computer proficiency.

Stage 3: Tier-III (Descriptive Paper)

  • Nature: Assessment of writing skills (Essay/Letter/PrĂ©cis).

  • Format: Pen and Paper mode.

Stage 4: Tier-IV (Skill Test)

  • Nature: Qualifying.

  • Format: Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) or Data Entry Skill Test (DEST), depending on the post requirements.

  • Online Option Form: Candidates must submit their preference of Posts/Departments via the Online Option Form on the SSC website before the final result declaration.

  • Mandatory Submission: Failure to submit preferences within the stipulated time will lead to disqualification from the final result.

  • Irreversible: Options once exercised are Final and Irreversible.

  • Merit-cum-Preference: Posts are allotted based on merit rank and the order of preference.

  • Medical/Physical Standards: If a candidate is allotted a post based on their preference but fails to meet the specific medical/physical/educational standards for that specific post, their candidature will be rejected. They will not be considered for any alternative post.

SSC CGL Tier-II Syllabus (Mains Exam)
Tier-II is an online objective exam and is the most important stage for final merit.

Paper-I: Quantitative Abilities
This paper tests advanced mathematical understanding. Topics include number systems, simplification, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, algebra (basic equations), geometry (lines, angles, triangles, circles), mensuration (area and volume), trigonometry (basic concepts), and data interpretation such as tables, graphs, and charts.

Paper-II: English Language and Comprehension
This paper checks advanced English skills. It includes grammar usage, error spotting, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, idioms and phrases, one-word substitution, spelling, sentence arrangement, and reading comprehension passages.

Paper-III: Statistics (for specific posts)
This paper is only for candidates applying for statistical posts. Topics include collection and presentation of data, measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), dispersion, correlation and regression, probability, sampling techniques, index numbers, and interpretation of statistical data.

Paper-IV: General Studies – Finance and Economics (for specific posts)
This paper covers basics of economics and finance such as demand and supply, national income, inflation, money and banking, public finance, budgeting, taxation, fiscal policy, financial institutions, accounting fundamentals, and government economic schemes.

SSC CGL Tier-III Syllabus (Descriptive Paper)
Tier-III is a pen-and-paper exam to assess writing ability. It includes essay writing, letter writing, application writing, and précis writing. The focus is on clarity of thought, grammar, vocabulary, and structured expression. This paper is compulsory and qualifying in nature but its marks are considered in final merit.

SSC CGL Tier-IV Syllabus (Skill Test / Computer Proficiency Test)
Tier-IV is conducted only for certain posts and is qualifying in nature. It includes typing test (English or Hindi), data entry skill test, and computer proficiency test. Computer proficiency covers basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and general computer operations. Candidates must meet the minimum required standards to be considered for final selection.

Overall, Tier-II evaluates subject knowledge, Tier-III checks written communication skills, and Tier-IV tests practical and computer-based abilities required for government posts.

SSC CGL Tier-II Exam Pattern (Mains – Computer Based Test)
Tier-II is the most crucial stage for merit ranking and is conducted online.

Paper-I: Quantitative Abilities
This paper consists of 100 objective-type questions carrying a total of 200 marks. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. Each correct answer carries 2 marks. Negative marking of 0.25 marks is applied for every wrong answer. The paper tests advanced mathematical and analytical skills.

Paper-II: English Language and Comprehension
This paper includes 200 objective-type questions for a total of 200 marks. The time duration is 2 hours. Each question carries 1 mark, and 0.25 marks are deducted for each incorrect answer. It evaluates advanced grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing accuracy.

Paper-III: Statistics (for specific posts)
Paper-III consists of 100 objective-type questions carrying 200 marks. The duration is 2 hours. Each correct answer carries 2 marks, with a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer. This paper is mandatory only for candidates applying for statistical posts.

Paper-IV: General Studies – Finance and Economics (for specific posts)
This paper includes 100 objective-type questions for 200 marks and has a duration of 2 hours. Each correct answer carries 2 marks, and 0.50 marks are deducted for incorrect answers. It is conducted only for posts related to finance and economics.

SSC CGL Tier-III Exam Pattern (Descriptive Paper)
Tier-III is conducted in offline mode using pen and paper. The exam is of 100 marks with a duration of 60 minutes. Candidates are required to write an essay, letter, application, or précis in English or Hindi. This tier evaluates writing skills, clarity of expression, and grammatical accuracy. Marks obtained in Tier-III are counted in the final merit list.

SSC CGL Tier-IV Exam Pattern (Skill Test / Computer Proficiency Test)
Tier-IV is a qualifying stage conducted for certain posts only. It includes a Data Entry Skill Test, Typing Test (English or Hindi), or Computer Proficiency Test depending on the post applied for. The test checks typing speed, data accuracy, and basic computer knowledge such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. No marks are awarded, but qualifying Tier-IV is mandatory for final selection where applicable.

Mode Of Examination

The Examination for Tier- I of the SSC CGL Examination will be held as a Computer Based Examination and will Contain Only Objective Type, Multiple Choice Based Questions.

Medium Of Examination

1. The Questions from General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness & Quantitative Aptitude will be available Both in English & Hindi Language.

2. The Questions from English Comprehension will be Available only in English.

Marking Scheme Highlights

Each Question Carries 2 Marks.

For Each Correct Answer, 2 Marks will be Awarded.

There will be a Negative Marking of 0.50 Marks for Each Wrong Answer.

No marks will be Deducted for the Unattempted Questions.

Based on the Marks Scored in Tier-I, Candidates will be Shortlisted, Category-Wise, to Appear in Tier-II Examination.

Note:- A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the Examination but the offer of appointment will be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (2), (3), (4), and (5) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Educational Qualifications

In order to be Eligible for SSC CGL Examination, the Candidates are Required to Possess at least a Graduation Degree from a Recognized University or Institute. The Candidates Appearing in the Final Year of their Graduation can also Apply for SSC CGL however, they must possess the SSC CGL. However, Detailed Information Regarding Educational Qualifications for Different Posts is given below:

Note: For the Post of Inspector (Central Excise/ Examiner/ Preventive Officer), Persons with Disabilities will have to Meet the Pphysical Standards like- Height, Chest and Weight s Prescribed for the Relevant Post. However, for Orthopaedically Disabled Candidates, the following Relaxation in Physical Test is allowed:

a) The test of “Walking” shall not be insisted in the case of OL and OAL categories.

b) The test of “Cycling” shall not be insisted in the case of OA, OL, and OAL categories.

LATEST UPDATE 2026

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has announced the schedule for the SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination 2025–26. Tier 1 was conducted in September 2025, while Tier 2 is scheduled for 18–19 January 2026, and Tier 3 and Tier 4 will be conducted later for eligible posts. SSC CGL is a national-level recruitment examination for Group B and C posts in various central government ministries, departments, and organisations. Candidates are advised to regularly visit the official SSC website (ssc.gov.in) for updates regarding notifications, admit cards, results, and the counselling process.

IMPORTANT DATES

The important dates for SSC CGL 2025–26 indicate that the official notification is expected to be released in mid-2025, followed by the start of the online application process shortly after. The last date to apply and pay the application fee usually falls within three to four weeks of notification release. The Tier-I examination is scheduled to be conducted in September 2025, while the Tier-I result is expected a few weeks later. The Tier-II examination is scheduled for 18–19 January 2026, followed by the declaration of Tier-II results. Tier-III (Descriptive Test) and Tier-IV (Skill/Computer Test) are conducted subsequently for shortlisted candidates.
