Finally, wait is over and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced class 12 Board exams date. This year class 12th board exam will be started from 15 February 2025 and will last upto 04 April 2025, it will take around 49 days to complete the class 12th board exam. The first exam will be held on 15 February 2025 for Entrepreneurship (Including Vocational Students) subject and the last exam will be held on 04 April 2025 for Psychology subject. The practical exams/Internal Assesment/Projects & the board’s annual theory examinations are scheduled to start w.e.f 01th January 2025 and 15th February 2025.

Unit I: Solid State

Classification of solids based on different binding forces: molecular, ionic, covalent and metallic solids, amorphous and crystalline solids (elementary idea). Unit cell in two-dimensional and three-dimensional lattices, calculation of density of unit cell, packing in solids, packing efficiency, voids, number of atoms per unit cell in a cubic unit cell, point defects, electrical and magnetic properties.

Band theory of metals, conductors, semiconductors and insulators and n and p-type semiconductors.

Unit II: Solution

Types of solutions, expression of concentration of solutions of solids in liquids, the solubility of gases in liquids, solid solutions, Raoult’s law, colligative properties-relative lowering of vapour pressure, the elevation of boiling point, depression of freezing point, osmotic pressure, determination of molecular masses using colligative properties, abnormal molecular mass, Van’t a Hoff factor.

Unit III: Electrochemistry

Redox reactions, EMF of a cell, standard electrode potential, Nernst equation and its application to chemical cells, Relation between Gibbs energy change and EMF of a cell, conductance in electrolytic solutions, specific and molar conductivity, variations of conductivity with concentration, Kohlrausch’s Law, electrolysis and law of electrolysis (elementary idea), dry cell-electrolytic cells and Galvanic cells, lead accumulator, fuel cells, corrosion.

Unit IV: Chemical Kinetics

Rate of a reaction (average and instantaneous), factors affecting rate of reaction: concentration, temperature, catalyst; order and molecularity of a reaction, rate law and specific rate constant, integrated rate equations and half-life (only for zero and first order reactions), the concept of collision theory (elementary idea, no mathematical treatment), activation energy, Arrhenius equation.

Unit V: Surface Chemistry

Adsorption-physisorption and chemisorption, factors affecting adsorption of gases on solids, catalysis: homogenous and heterogeneous, activity and selectivity of solid catalysts; enzyme catalysis, colloidal state: the distinction between true solutions, colloids and suspension; lyophilic, lyophobic, multi-molecular and macromolecular colloids; properties of colloids; Tyndall effect, Brownian movement, electrophoresis, coagulation, emulsion-types of emulsions.

Unit VI:  General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements

Principles and methods of extraction-concentration, oxidation, reduction-electrolytic method and refining; occurrence and principles of extraction of aluminium, copper, zinc and iron.

Unit VIII: d and f Block Elements

General introduction, electronic configuration, occurrence and characteristics of transition metals, general trends in properties of the first-row transition metals–metallic character, ionization enthalpy, oxidation states, ionic radii, colour, catalytic property, magnetic properties, interstitial compounds, alloy formation, preparation and properties of K2Cr2O7and KMnO4.

Lanthanoids- Electronic configuration, oxidation states, chemical reactivity and lanthanoid contraction and its consequences.

Actinoids- Electronic configuration, oxidation states and comparison with lanthanoids.

Unit IX: Coordination Compounds

Coordination compounds-Introduction, ligands, coordination number, colour, magnetic properties and shapes, IUPAC nomenclature of mononuclear coordination compounds. Bonding, Werner’s theory, VBT, and CFT; structure and stereo isomerism, the importance of coordination compounds (in qualitative analysis, extraction of metals and biological system).

Unit X:   Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Haloalkanes: Nomenclature, nature of C–X bond, physical and chemical properties, optical rotation mechanism of substitution reactions.

Haloarenes: Nature of C–X bond, substitution reactions (Directive influence of halogen in monosubstituted compounds only).

Uses and environmental effects of dichloromethane, trichloromethane, tetrachloromethane, iodoform, freons, DDT.

Unit XI:  Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers

Alcohols: Nomenclature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties (of primary alcohols only), identification of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols, mechanism of dehydration, and uses with special reference to methanol and ethanol.

Phenols: Nomenclature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties, acidic nature of phenol, electrophilic substitution reactions, uses of phenols.

Ethers: Nomenclature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties, uses.

Unit XII: Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Aldehydes and Ketones: Nomenclature, nature of carbonyl group, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties, mechanism of nucleophilic addition, the reactivity of alpha hydrogen in aldehydes, uses.

Carboxylic Acids: Nomenclature, acidic nature, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties; uses.

Unit XIII: Amines

Amines: Nomenclature, classification, structure, methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties, uses, and identification of primary, secondary and tertiary amines.

Diazonium salts: Preparation, chemical reactions and importance in synthetic organic chemistry.

Unit XIV: Biomolecules

Carbohydrates- Classification (aldoses and ketoses), monosaccharides (glucose and fructose), D-L configuration oligosaccharides (sucrose, lactose, maltose), polysaccharides (starch, cellulose, glycogen); Importance of carbohydrates.

Proteins- Elementary idea of-amino acids, peptide bonds, polypeptides, proteins, the structure of proteins-primary, secondary, tertiary structure and quaternary structures (qualitative idea only), denaturation of proteins; enzymes. Hormones-Elementary idea excluding structure.

Vitamins- Classification and functions.

Unit XV: Polymers

Classification- Natural and synthetic, methods of polymerization (addition and condensation), copolymerization, some important polymers: natural and synthetic like polythene, nylon polyesters, bakelite, rubber. Biodegradable and non-biodegradable polymers.

Unit XVI: Chemistry in everyday life

Chemicals in medicines- Analgesics, tranquillizers antiseptics, disinfectants, antimicrobials, antifertility drugs, antibiotics, antacids, antihistamines.

Chemicals in food- Preservatives, artificial sweetening agents, elementary idea of antioxidants.

Cleansing agents- Soaps and detergents, cleansing action.

PRACTICAL SYLLABUS

Micro-chemical methods are available for several practical experiments. Wherever possible, such techniques should be used.

A. Surface Chemistry

(a) Preparation of one lyophilic and one lyophobic sol

1. Lyophilic sol-starch, egg albumin and gum

2. Lyophobic sol – aluminium hydroxide, ferric hydroxide, arsenous sulphide.

(b) Dialysis of sol-prepared in (a) above.

(c) Study of the role of emulsifying agents in stabilizing the emulsion of different oils.

B. Chemical Kinetics

(a) Effect of concentration and temperature on the rate of reaction between Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid.

(b) Study of reaction rates of any one of the following:

1. The reaction of Iodide ions with Hydrogen Peroxide at room temperature using different concentrations of Iodide ions.

2. The reaction between Potassium Iodate, (KIO3) and Sodium Sulphite: (Na2SO3) using starch solution as an indicator (clock reaction).

C. Thermochemistry

Any one of the following experiments

1. Enthalpy of dissolution of Copper Sulphate or Potassium Nitrate.

2. Enthalpy of neutralization of strong acid (HCI) and strong base (NaOH).

3. Determination of enthalpy change during interaction (Hydrogen bond formation) between Acetone and Chloroform.

D. Electrochemistry

Variation of cell potential in Zn/Zn2+|| Cu2+/Cu with change in concentration of electrolytes (CuSO4 or ZnSO4) at room temperature.

E. Chromatography

1. Separation of pigments from extracts of leaves and flowers by paper chromatography and determination of Rf values.

2. Separation of constituents present in an inorganic mixture containing two cations only (constituents having a large difference in Rf values to be provided).

F. Preparation of Organic Compounds

Preparation of any one of the following compounds

1. Acetanilide

2. Di -benzalAcetone

3. p-Nitroacetanilide

4. Aniline yellow or Naphthol Aniline dye

G. Tests for the functional groups present in organic compounds: 

Unsaturation, alcoholic, phenolic, aldehydic, ketonic, carboxylic and amino (Primary) groups.

H. Characteristic tests of carbohydrates, fats and proteins in pure samples and their detection in given foodstuffs.

I. Determination of concentration/molarity of KMnO4 solution by titrating it against a standard solution of:

1. Oxalic acid

2. Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate (Students will be required to prepare standard solutions by weighing themselves)

J. Qualitative analysis

Determination of one cation and one anion in a given salt.

Cation : Pb2+, Cu2+, As3+, Al3+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Ng2+, NH4+

Anions: (CO3)2-, S2-, (SO3)2-, (NO2), (SO4)2-, Cl, Br, I, PO, C2O4, CH3COO, NH3

(Note: Insoluble salts excluded)

PROJECT

Scientific investigations involving laboratory testing and collecting information from other sources 

A few suggested Projects.

1. Study of the presence of oxalate ions in guava fruit at different stages of ripening.

2. Study of quantity of casein present in different samples of milk.

3. Preparation of soybean milk and its comparison with natural milk with respect to curd formation, the effect of temperature, etc.

4. Study of the effect of Potassium Bisulphate as a food preservative  under various conditions (temperature, concentration, time, etc.)

5. Study of digestion of starch by salivary amylase and effect of pH and temperature on it.

6. Comparative study of the rate of fermentation of the following materials: wheat flour, gram flour, potato juice, carrot juice, etc.

7. Extraction of essential oils present in Saunf (aniseed), Ajwain (carum), and Illaichi (cardamom).

8. Study of common food adulterants in fat, oil, butter, sugar, turmeric powder, chilli powder and pepper.

Note: Any other investigatory project, which involves about 10 periods of work, can be chosen with the approval of the teacher.

This year class 12th board exam will be started from 15 February 2025 and will last upto 04 April 2025, it will take around 49 days to complete the class 12th board exam. The first exam will be held on 15 February 2025 for Entrepreneurship (Including Vocational Students) subject and the last exam will be held on 04 April 2025 for Psychology subject. The practical exams/Internal Assesment/Projects & the board’s annual theory examinations are scheduled to start w.e.f 01th January 2025 and 15th February 2025.

Conditions of eligibility for admission to class XII

1. Candidates who have been studying in a School recognised by or affiliated to this Board or any other recognised Board of Secondary Education in India.

2. Candidates can not take admission directly in class XII.

3. Candidates had completed a regular course of study for class XI and passed class XI examination from a school affilicated to this Board.

4. The candidates percentage for attendance should be 75% so that the Board to make him/her eligible for the Examinations.

5. Candidate can be admitted to a school only on the transfer of the parents(s) or shifting of their families from one place to another, after procuring from the student the marksheet and the Transfer Certificate duly countersigned by the Educational Authorities of the Board Concerned.

6. There is no age limit for candidates taking the Examination.

7. Candidate should have doucments in support of his having passed the qualifying or equivalent qualifying examination.

CBSE Chemistry Analysis 2022

CBSE Class 12 Chemistry paper 2022 was conducted on May 07, 2022. The Chemistry paper was easy and straight from the NCERT books.

1. This question paper contains 55 questions, out of which 45 questions are to be attempted. All questions carry equal marks.

2. The question paper consists of three Sections A, B, and C.

3. Section A consists of 25 questions, attempt any 20 questions from any 20 questions Q. No. 1 to 25.

4. Section B also consists of 24 questions, attempt any 20 questions from Q. No. 26 to 49.

5. Section C consists of 6 questions. Attempt any 5 questions from Q. No. 50 to 55.

6. There is only one correct option for every Multiple Choice Question (MCQ), Marks will not be awarded for answering more than one option.

7. All questions carry equal marks. There is no negative marking.

Major Highlights

1. The difficulty level of the CBSE Chemistry paper 2022: Easy.

2. The Chemistry paper was easy and straight from the NCERT books.

Paper Analysis

The paper was of Moderate level and most of the questions were asked from the NCERT book. There was no overall choice in Section A of the question paper. However, an internal choice has been provided in 2 questions for two marks in Section B, 2 questions for three marks, and all three questions for 5 marks in Sections C & D. Students have to attempt only one question in such choices. According to the Overall analysis, 80% of the Chemistry paper was easy while 20% was difficult.

1. All questions are compulsory. The total number of question will be 37.

2. The paper will be divided in four sections: Section A, Section B, Section C and Section D.

3.  Section A: Question no. 1 to 20 are very short answer questions (objective type) and carry 1 mark each.

4. Section B: Question no. 21 to 27 are short answer questions and carry 2 marks each.

5. Section C: Question no. 28 to 34 are long answer question and carry 3 marks each.

6. Section D: Question no. 35 to 37 are also long answer questions and carry 5 marks each.

7.There is no overall choice. However an internal choice has been provided in two question of two marks, two questions of three marks and all the three questions of five marks weightage. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
